Treefrogs near the top of a tropical rainforest

چکیده

In May 2019, during a routine canopy survey near the National Forest Ecosystem Research Station at Xishuangbanna, in southwest China, an Asian black-webbed treefrog (Rhacophorus kio) was observed resting on leaf of flowering Parashorea chinensis tree (right). The same species again October only this time perched epiphyte (Microsorum punctatum) crown adult P (left). heights these particular dipterocarp trees were approximately 62 m, and two frogs 57.0 m 34.6 respectively, as measured via cranes – far exceeding maximum vertical height previously recorded (20.5 for Hyla versicolor) (Ecology 2017; https://doi.org/10.1002/ecy.1843). To best our knowledge, images likely document highest arboreal that have ever been photographed. It is uncommon to observe frog emergent (top) layer tropical rainforest, few reasons. For starters, considered one tallest capable growing up 80 which too high amphibian climb. relatively hot dry conditions typical habitat also seem unsuitable amphibians. Furthermore, members rely foliage protect themselves from predators physical exposure, effectively conceals them human observers. Thanks development forest science, biodiversity within layer, has largely overlooked previous decades, can now be studied more effectively. We suspect R kio may attracted food resources (mainly insects) season layer. If so, how many other found layer? And are worldwide declines large due deforestation, fragmentation, climate change influencing populations species?

Metabolism of a tropical rainforest stream

Gradients in photosynthesis (P) and respiration (R) were measured on an unperturbed portion of the Rio Mameyes, a tropical stream in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, northeastern Puerto Rico. Rates of P, which were similar to those of streams in temperate-deciduous forests, were low in the heavily canopied headwaters (<70 g>O2 m−2 y−1) and were higher (453–634 g O2 m−2 y−1) in middle and lower...

Understorey bird responses to the edge-interior gradient in an isolated tropical rainforest of Malaysia

Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of...

Tropical Rainforest Ecology from a Canopy Perspective

Many processes that are fundamental to tropical rainforest maintenance and regeneration take place in the forest canopy. Recently developed access techniques afford biologists nondestructive means to document and quantify canopy biota and their accompanying activities and interactions. Results from studies involving within-canopy observations and measurements of nutrient cycling, epiphyte distr...

Tropical Rainforest Conservation: A Global Perspective

The five major rainforest regions (Asia, Africa, Madagascar, Neotropics, and New Guinea) are distinct ecological and biogeographical entities, each with its own levels of threat from various human activities. The purpose of this chapter is to review these threats, and then to evaluate the conservation strategies being used to deal with them. Across the tropics, commercial logging is increasingl...
